Our story
My name is Francien Mels - I am a mother of four, studied at Eindhoven University of Technology, worked at Philips, supported mothers as a sleep coach and am the creator and founder of Pikobaby.com. From the need to help others with my own insights as a mother, scientist and sleep coach.
Together with others, I put more than 10,000 hours into the development of the PIKO. And it all started with a few insights I received. I'm happy to explain them to you.
Sleeping well is important for your baby, but not guaranteed.
From surveys of Dutch families with babies up to 1 year old, 5 in 10 parents (50%) experience their child's sleep as a major concern. And sleep is crucial for babies' development.
- Sleep helps physical growth, brain growth and immune system function
- Sleep stimulates emotional development and behavior of babies
- Good sleep contributes to parental well-being
Parents live busy lives
Parents often have busy lives are on the go a lot. Research shows that babies sleep in an average of five different places per week (e.g., bed, playpen, stroller, grandpa/grandpa, daycare, visitation, picnic and on the go).
What we know about baby sleep:
- Babies sleep better in a quiet environment with few stimuli such as noise and light
- Babies who go to bed and wake up according to a fixed and recognizable rhythm often sleep better. This helps them develop an internal clock that regulates their sleep-wake rhythm.
And so the central question I asked myself was. How do I increase the chances of babies sleeping better in today's busy lives of parents? And together with partners and government agencies, I developed the PIKO.
