Putting your baby to sleep in the car

Putting your baby to sleep in the car

For a baby, predictability is very important: then he knows what is coming, and this gives a familiar feeling. Especially around sleep, this is essential, as it helps your little one to "let go" and surrender to sleep.

For this reason, we also recommend using one permanent sleeping spot for your little one as much as possible - and the number of sleeping spots per week should not exceed two different spots (e.g., own crib and stroller).

Letting a baby sleep in the car is not recommended because you don't want this to be a regular sleeping place simply because of the baby's bent posture.

Now sometimes it is unavoidable to put your baby to sleep in the car, especially during long trips. Then, to make it as comfortable as possible for both your baby and yourself, here are a few helpful tips:

Make the car environment as comfortable as possible for your baby

Watch the temperature and make sure the sun is not shining in his face (hang a cloth in front of the window if necessary).

Make use of sleep associations

If your baby is used to certain sleep associations at home, try to reproduce them as much as possible in the car. This could be a favorite cuddly toy or soothing music.

Try to stick to your baby's sleep routine as much as possible

As the usual sleep time approaches, put your little one in the car seat and go for a drive. Also, let your baby sleep in the car seat until he wakes up (most little ones wake up when you try to put them over in their own beds, and this causes a disrupted rhythm). When you arrive at your destination, put your little one with the car seat in a quiet place so he can continue sleeping for a while. Of course, you should never let your child sleep alone in a (too hot/too cold) car.

Minimize disruptions

Keep the car ride as quiet as possible so as not to disturb your baby's sleep. Avoid loud noises and sudden movements that may interrupt sleep.

With the above advice, you can get your baby to sleep in the car as best you can. At the same time, be aware that this is not ideal for your baby and keep this in mind if he is tired earlier - make sure to take it easy then and put him to bed on time.

How the Piko helps

It is nice for a baby to have a fixed sleeping place as much as possible. This offers predictability and that gives a familiar feeling. When you are on the road, this is not always easy. On longer car trips, you have no choice but to let your baby sleep in the car. But then it is extra nice if your baby can sleep in his own, familiar bed at the destination. And that's possible with the Piko. Because the Piko is a fixed, familiar sleeping place that you can use at home, but also easily take with you.
